How to turn a Google Meet recording into text, even when nobody switched on the transcript

·Updated October 26, 2026·8 min read
The short answer

You have a Google Meet recording but no text to go with it. A recording only includes a transcript if a person turned on Transcripts during the call and they have a paid Workspace plan. If that did not happen, you will need to get the file from the organizer's Google Drive inside the Google Meet folder. You can then change the video into text on your own computer. If the video is locked to view only, ask the organizer to send you the file or turn on downloads.

You have a link from a calendar invite for a recorded Google Meet call. The video plays fine, but you see no transcript next to it. You might need those words to write meeting minutes or put into an AI to check what people agreed on. Do not worry, because nothing went wrong on your computer.

Meet only writes out a transcript while the call is happening, and it only works if someone actually presses the Transcripts button. If nobody turned it on, you will need to download the video from Drive and turn it into text on your own computer. I will explain where Google keeps that file and why some files let you download them while others do not. I will also show you how to keep a copy of the presented slides, because a normal Meet transcript leaves them out completely.

Does Google Meet make a transcript of every recording?

Recording the video and saving the text are two different buttons in Meet. Google's transcripts help page notes that a person must start the text from Meeting tools during the call. The host can also set it to start automatically, and it finishes when all people leave. You will not find a button to generate text from the video after the meeting ends.

The type of account matters for this feature. Transcripts work on Business Standard, Business Plus, the Enterprise plans, Education Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Workspace Individual. They support English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. A free Gmail account does not allow recording a meeting. So if you use a free account, the only video you have is one someone else made using a different tool.

Where is a Google Meet recording saved?

A small blue folder tucked inside a larger grey folder, like a recording saved one folder deeper

The video goes to the organizer's Google Drive, even if a different person clicked Record. Google changed this behavior in July 2026. Google's recording help page explains that recordings now save into a folder named Google Meet, and each meeting gets a separate folder inside that. The old Meet Recordings folder is now named Legacy Meet Recordings, and it lives inside the new Google Meet folder. If you normally look for the old folder name, you just need to click one level deeper.

  1. You can open the meeting event in Google Calendar and click the recording link there. You can also use the link sent in the email to the organizer.
  2. The link will open the file in Drive. Click Download at the top of the screen.
  3. Save the video file to a simple place like your Downloads folder. Give it a name you can easily recognize later.

People who attended the meeting receive a shortcut to the video in their own Drive. It helps to look in your Shared with me section. A recording stops on its own after 8 hours. So a full day workshop will show up as more than one file.

Why can't I download the Google Meet recording?

The download button depends on the date of the meeting. Before 30 April 2026, a viewer could not copy or download a Meet recording unless the owner explicitly allowed it. Google later changed the default to let people download new recordings. This change only affected new files, so older recordings kept their original restrictions.

Older recordings usually stay locked to view only for anyone except the organizer. A newer video might also be locked if the owner restricted it, or if your company admin turned off the setting that allows downloading Meet recordings. The best way to fix this is to ask the organizer to send you the file or turn on downloads. It only takes them a minute, and that is much better than trying to screen record a video they meant to keep locked.

What is the free way to turn a Meet recording into text?

OpenAI's Whisper is a free tool that runs on your own computer and never uploads your files. You have to use it from a terminal, and a terminal is just a text window where you type commands instead of clicking buttons. Whisper needs Python and ffmpeg installed on your computer first, and that page tells you how to set them up.

  1. Put your downloaded recording into a new folder on its own. Open your terminal window inside that folder.
  2. Type whisper "meeting.mp4" --model small --output_format txt, using the real name of your file.
  3. Press enter and let it run. The tool listens to the entire meeting from start to finish, so a long call will take a while if you have an ordinary laptop.
  4. Look for the new .txt file that shows up next to your video. You can open it to read the words.

This tool gives you the spoken words and nothing else. Whisper cannot tell you who was talking at any point. It also cannot see the screen, and the screen is usually where the actual numbers sit during a work meeting.

How do I keep the slides that were presented, not just the words?

Printed meeting slides with simple charts in a row beside a laptop, the part a transcript leaves out

Google records the person speaking and anything they present on the screen, so the video contains the slides. Google's own page clearly states that only spoken words go into the transcript. This means the slides never make it into the final text. This causes a problem when someone says "as you can see on this one, the second quarter is the issue", because the number they mean is only visible on the slide.

I built a tool called VideoDoc to solve this exact problem. You go to the Local tab and pick your downloaded recording. It builds a PDF and a Markdown document containing the words and times, and it places screenshots of the presentation right next to what people said. When the video switches between people's faces and a shared screen, my tool grabs the screen frames. VideoDoc runs entirely on your own computer, so your work meeting never goes up to the internet. It also does not matter which Workspace plan your company pays for, because the software only needs the video file to work.

I originally made this tool for video lectures, because I needed my AI to read the slides instead of just hearing the teacher. A work meeting has the exact same problem. If you need to share the document outside your team, VideoDoc can black out the faces on the camera tiles. It covers the faces in both the saved pictures and the screenshots inside the document.

Honest limits

VideoDoc does not try to guess who is speaking. If Meet already built a transcript and you only want the text, you should just use that. VideoDoc also cannot open a Google Drive link directly, because the recording sits locked behind your work sign in. It needs you to put the video file on your computer first. The time it takes to finish the job will depend on your computer speed and the length of the meeting.

If your company also uses Teams, you will find the rules are different. I wrote about that process in turning a Teams recording into text. There is also my guide for Zoom recordings, because Zoom handles text differently and depends on a cloud recording.

Quick questions

Can I get a Google Meet transcript after the meeting has ended?

You cannot get it directly from Meet, because someone has to start Transcripts while the meeting is happening. You can still create text later using the recording. You just download the video and run it through a tool on your own computer.

Where do Google Meet recordings go?

The videos go to the organizer's Google Drive. You will find them in a folder called Google Meet, and each meeting gets its own folder inside that. Older recordings sit in a folder called Legacy Meet Recordings, and Google moved that folder inside the new Google Meet folder.

Why is there no download option on a Google Meet recording?

People watching a video made before 30 April 2026 could not download it unless the owner permitted it. Newer videos let you download them by default. Sometimes an owner or admin turns downloads off, so you should just ask the organizer to send you the file.

Can you record a Google Meet call on a free Gmail account?

You cannot do this on a free account. Recording requires an eligible Workspace plan or a Google One plan with 2 TB or more of storage. If you use a free account, you have to get the video from a person who has the right plan to make one.

You can try this out tonight by opening the calendar invite for your last recorded Meet call. Get the video from Drive and use it to build a document that keeps all the slides.
