How to turn a Vimeo or Dailymotion video into text, and which videos no tool can reach

·Updated October 12, 2026·6 min read
The short answer

To turn a Vimeo video into text, first look for the Transcript button under the player. This button appears when the owner turns captions on. But if it is missing, you can paste the link into a tool that downloads the video and transcribes the audio. This works for public Vimeo and Dailymotion videos. Private, password and team-only videos need a login, so a link tool cannot reach them.

You might have found a talk, a course lesson or a product demo on Vimeo or Dailymotion. You probably want it as text so you can search it, quote it or hand it to ChatGPT. Most guides for this come from transcription services, and they tell you to paste the link into their box. This works sometimes, but they never explain why it fails the rest of the time.

Before you use any tool, check the Transcript button under the Vimeo player. If it is there, the text already exists and it is free. But if it is not there, a tool can only help depending on the privacy setting the owner chose when they uploaded the video. Vimeo has six privacy settings, and only some of them allow a tool to reach the video.

Does Vimeo already have a transcript I can read?

Vimeo can make captions automatically for the owner. When the owner turns a transcript on, a Transcript button shows up below the player on vimeo.com. You can click it and the full text opens in a panel beside the video. The words are highlighted as they are spoken, and there is a search box to find a specific line. Vimeo explains this on its transcript help page.

The owner has not turned a transcript on if there is no Transcript button. You cannot switch it on from your side. The same rule applies to the CC button in the player. Captions only exist if the uploader made them or allowed Vimeo to make them.

Which Vimeo videos can a tool actually reach?

A small padlock beside a laptop, like a private or password video that a link tool cannot open

Every tool that turns a link into text has to fetch the video first. This includes my own tool, and it works just like your browser does when you press play. A tool with only the link cannot watch the video if you need to sign in or type a password to see it. These are Vimeo's own settings, and you can read about them in its privacy settings overview.

Privacy settingWho can watchCan a link tool reach it?
PublicAnyone, and it can show up in search enginesYes
UnlistedAnyone who has the full link, no account neededOnly with the full link, the extra numbers at the end included
Embed onlyPeople on the website it is embedded in, not on vimeo.comOften not, because there is no Vimeo page to fetch
PasswordPeople who type the passwordNo
Anyone at a companyMembers of that organisation, after they log inNo
PrivateOnly the owner and their teamNo

Dailymotion works the same way in practice. A public Dailymotion video plays for anyone, so a link tool is able to fetch it. But a private or password protected video does not play for everyone, and no tool should pretend it can bypass that.

The unlisted setting catches a lot of people off guard. An unlisted Vimeo link has an extra set of numbers at the end. The video will not open for anyone if you copy only the first part, so a tool will fail as well. You need to copy the address bar exactly as it is.

What is the free way to get the text?

A downloaded video being turned into text on a laptop at home, with headphones beside it

There is a Download button on the video's page on vimeo.com if the owner allowed downloads. Vimeo says this button only appears on the vimeo.com page and never in an embedded player. Only paid accounts can switch this feature on, as its download help page explains. The text is free once you have the file.

  1. Open the video on vimeo.com and click the Transcript button. If it is there, you are done.
  2. If not, look for the Download button on the same page and save the video file.
  3. Run the file through a free transcriber on your own computer, for example OpenAI's Whisper, which turns speech into text and does not need the internet once it is set up.
  4. If there is no Download button either, the owner did not allow it, and you are left with a link tool.

The free way has limits. Whisper is a command line tool, meaning you type commands instead of clicking buttons. A slow laptop can take a long time on an hour of video with it. It also only hears the sound, so none of the slides or code a speaker shows will end up in the text.

I build VideoDoc. Vimeo and Dailymotion links did not always work in it because both sites check that a request comes from a real browser. The app was turned away for a while. I fixed that in version 0.1.23 in July 2026, and since then a public link from either site downloads just like a YouTube link does.

You paste the link and pick what you want. Selecting "A document for AI" gives you a PDF and a Markdown file. These files include the transcript and screenshots of what was on screen, so the slides end up in the document alongside the words. Selecting "Just the video file" saves the video itself. Vimeo and Dailymotion videos do not have captions the app can borrow like it does on YouTube, so VideoDoc listens to the audio on your own computer. This process is a little slower, but nothing is uploaded anywhere.

VideoDoc stops and tells you it needs a sign in if the video is private, password protected or only for a company's members. It does this instead of failing with an error. I want to give you the honest answer here. The video is not public, so a link alone is not enough to access it.

Honest limits

VideoDoc only works with public videos. It cannot open a password, private or team only Vimeo video. An embed only video that has no vimeo.com page often cannot be fetched either. The transcript comes from listening to the audio, so you will need to check for mistakes if there are heavy accents, music under the voice or several people talking at once. The app runs on Windows and on Apple Silicon Macs, but not on Intel Macs.

Free to try. Pro is $19 once, for two machines.

I wrote an article about whether it is safe to upload a video to a transcription site if you are not sure whether to trust a website with your file. And I also wrote a guide on how to turn an X video into text if your video is on X instead.

Quick questions

How do I get the transcript of a Vimeo video?

You open the video on vimeo.com and click the Transcript button below the player. This button only appears when the owner has turned a transcript on. But if it is missing, you can download the video if the owner allowed it, or you can paste the link into a tool that transcribes the audio.

Can I transcribe a private Vimeo video?

You cannot do this with a link tool. A private, password or team only video needs a login to watch. A tool that only has the link cannot fetch it. You have to ask the owner for the file or for a transcript.

Why does my unlisted Vimeo link not work?

An unlisted link has an extra set of numbers at the end. The video only opens with those numbers included. You need to copy the whole address from the browser bar and not just the first part.

Can I turn a Dailymotion video into text?

Yes, you can do this if the video is public. You paste the link into a tool that downloads the video and transcribes the audio. But private and password protected Dailymotion videos need the owner's permission.

You should open the Vimeo video you wanted as text and look under the player for the Transcript button. You only need to reach for a tool if that button is not there.
