How to turn a Twitter (X) video into text when there is no transcript button
X has no transcript button. You cannot copy the words from a video post the way you do on YouTube. The way around it is to copy the post link and paste it into a tool that listens to the audio and writes it down with timestamps. You also need to keep pictures of the screen to save any text shown on the video. Public posts work by link, but a protected post needs the video file itself.
You see a video on X and want to keep the words. It might be a founder explaining their pricing or a doctor talking about a study or a two minute tutorial showing a setting you need. You open the menu to find a transcript and there is nothing there. So you end up scrubbing back and forth and typing the words out by hand.
X does not give you a transcript, so you have to make one from the audio. That is the whole method. Getting the words out of a post takes a minute or two once you know how to do it, and you can do the first part for free.
Why is there no transcript on X videos?
YouTube builds a text version of most videos and hides it behind a Show transcript button. X never built that panel. Some X videos do show captions on the screen. These come from automatic captions or a file the person uploaded, and X explains this in its help page on uploading a caption file.
But captions on X play over the video one line at a time and then disappear. There is no button to show them all as one block you can copy. Many posts have no captions at all, so the audio is the only place the words exist.
There is another problem that the top tools for this search never mention. Many X videos show words on screen that are never spoken out loud. You might see a chart or a code snippet or a quote card or a price table shown for a few seconds. A text transcript of the audio alone misses all of this visual information.
Is there a free way to get the words from a Twitter video?
You can do this on your own computer. Windows 11 has a feature called Live Captions. You press the Windows key and Ctrl and L together, and then play the X video. Windows writes the speech on the screen as it listens. Microsoft confirms in its Live Captions help page that all of this happens on the device and nothing goes to the cloud.
The limit is that Live Captions does not save anything. The same page says the captions are not stored anywhere, so you only read them and do not get a file. You can pause a short clip and copy the lines into a note. I think that is fine if you only have one video.
If the video is your own post, you already have the file on your phone or laptop. You can skip X completely and transcribe the file free without uploading it. This gets you real text with timestamps.
How do I turn an X video into text from the link?

I work in telecom, and the X videos I actually save are engineers walking through a network diagram. The speaker in those videos says "as you can see here" again and again. The text transcript on its own makes no sense, so the pictures of the screen end up being the real content.
What if the post is private or X asks me to log in?
